Summer 2005 Teachers and Counselors
We are pleased to announce that Ogawa Eri Sensei will lead our Japanese Immersion Program. Ogawa Sensei started teaching Japanese at Nishimachi International School when I was a student in the 1970’s. Many of my non-Japanese classmates are fluent in Japanese and use their language skills in their professions, thanks to Ogawa Sensei. We are very fortunate to have someone with such wealth of experience join our faculty this summer.
Alison will lead the English Immersion Program. As many of you know, Alison spent her childhood in Tokyo going to Nishimachi International School (she is my classmate) before going to a boarding school in Pennsylvania, Brown University (B.A.) and Seattle University (M.A.). She taught English as a Second Language for a number of years in Kyoto and has published on that subject,. She is currently an elementary school teacher in Poulsbo, Washington. Alison is returning to Japan for the second summer in a row to teach at GKA along with her daughter Marina (who came with Alison last year) and her two other daughters Annie and Ruby, as well as teaching assistant Olivia.
Ikuko is our early childhood specialist. She teaches the Early Advantage class at GKA throughout the year and it is her second time to work in our summer program. She holds a degree from Aoyama Gakuin and received her Hoikushi (early childhood licnese) upon completing her courses at Sophia University. The young children are mesmerized around Ikuko Sensei and learn skills from her with amazing speed. After taking a brief vacation in Europe, Ikuko Sensei will teach most weeks in Session 2.
Erica is a B.A. candidate from Indiana University, majoring in elementary education with a concentration in philosophy. . A graduate of the International School of Sacred Heart, she is fully bilingual and is an excellent role model for the children. She is very interested in the impact of culture on education and has done comparative studies on kindergarten systems in different parts of the world.
Nao will join us this summer as soon as she receives a B.A. in July from the Faculty of Comparative Culture of Sophia University with concentration in social sciences and linguistics and teaching methods. She holds a TEFL (teaching of English as a Foreign Language) diploma. Before going to Sophia University, Nao attended Seisen International School. She was a supervisor of the Readiness Program at St. Mary’s.
