Many children shared their exciting stories of their winter vacation. With stories of Christmas and New Years, we all shared our precious memories during circle time and asked each other about the holidays. Most of the children wrote their New Year's Resolutions. Some wrote "I want to read challenging books in English" while a few stated "I want to break a record in jump roping". A few said "I will help my parents with household chores." What great kids! The dog year has started, so the children wrote about pet dogs or our favorite breeds of dogs. The older children used the internet to do a research of the French Bulldog and presented it to the younger children. With the Winter Olympics approaching, we also did a regional study of Italy, creating a map, conducting an Italian food survey, and thinking of where they would like to visit in Italy. As the Olympic atmosphere filled the air, we moved on to the winter sports, with which some children were familiar from previous studies. This time, we researched and created posters. A group of boys were in charge of ice hockey and a group of girls were in charge of figure skating. Both groups divided the work among themselves and showed great teamwork. They wrote down the rules, the characteristics, and listed famous skaters. Some created a booklet of winter sports on the ice tracks: bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton. The children were amazed by these sports and made remarks such as “It looks so dangerous! They could get hurt!”. Along with these exciting themes, the children were exposed to many phonics exercises focusing on rhyming words. This month was a great start for a new year. Let’s keep up the good work!

年も明け、GKAにまたたくさんの笑顔が戻ってきました！新しい年を迎えるにふさわしい、楽しいテーマをもとに１月も充実した月になりました。まずは冬休みの新鮮な思い出をサークルタイムの時間でみんなに発表し、子供たち同士、英語で質問をしながら盛り上がりました。たくさんの期待を胸に、新年の決意 (New Year Resolution) も書いてくれました。"I want to read challenging books in English"や"I want to break a record in jump roping"、"I will help my parents with household chores"など、頼もしいことを書いてくれました。さらに、今年の干支の「犬」にちなんで、自分の犬、又は好きな犬のことを書いたり、犬かるたで遊んだりしました。高学年の子供たちにはフレンチブルドッグのリサーチをしてました。インターネットを使い、特徴や習性などを調べ、最後にクラスに発表しました。トリノオリンピックも近づいているということで、オリンピックの開催国、イタリアについてお勉強しました。地図を作り、有名な都市を学びました。イタリア料理についてアンケートも行いました。パスタとラザニアが人気あったようです。次に、冬のオリンピックの競技を勉強しました。二手にわかれ、男の子たちはアイスホッケーを調べ、女の子たちはフィギュアスケートを調べ、役割を決め、ポスターを作りました。ルールや特徴、有名な選手を書きました。又、アイストラックで行われる競技の本を作り、ボブスレーからルージュ、スケルトンなどあまり知られてない競技も勉強しました。"It looks so dangerous. They could get hurt!" 等のコメントもあり、楽しみながらお勉強できました。テーマに沿って勉強しつつ、フォニックスのアクティビティーを常に取り入れ、ゲームや工作で楽しい時間を過ごしました。一月も素晴らしいスタートになったと思います。今年もがんばりましょう！
