We support bilingual education.

On February 3rd, we discussed what we do on Setsubun, a Japanese tradition in which we wish for good luck. The Japanese students did a great job explaining to our new teacher, who came from the United States, about this tradition. The students who came on Friday had the opportunity to take part in a “mamemaki” event down in Azabu Juban. In the following week, we moved onto a Chinese New Year theme. The children learned about the Chinese tradition through a play based on a mythical story of a monster called Nian, The children played board games, made a Chinese dragon, and also studied about the country, China. As the Winter Olympics started, the children made a poster to record the results of the medals. Requiring a lot of teamwork, everyone worked very hard. The children were excited to update the poster with new results everyday. Meanwhile, with Valentine’s Day approaching, everyone made their own mailboxes. Everyone wrote letters to their friends at GKA. On Valentine’s Day, the Tuesday children had a chance to bake a brownie. They completed the recipe and had a sweet treat! Some children studied the brave story of St. Valentine, and learned why we celebrate this day. On the last week, the children studied President’s Day. We talked about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and drew their faces on the dollar bills. On Wednesday, we divided into two groups and performed an informative presentation based on the booklets they made. Some wrote what they would do if they were the President! With many themes packed in February, we also made a board game, with questions created by the children. We read many books and some wrote book reports on them. This month was packed with discoveries of new traditions from different cultures.

一月に続き、２月も楽しいテーマが盛りだくさんでした。まずは、アメリカでおなじみのグラウンドホグ（マーモット）の日をとりあげ、可愛いマーモットの伝説を勉強しながら、楽しい工作をしました。次に、節分の行事を英語で説明し、外国から来た新しい先生に日本の文化を教えてあげました。３日に来た子供たちは麻布十番の豆まきのイベントにも参加しました。次の週は旧正月、チャイニーズニューイヤーをとりあげ、様々なアクティビティーをやりました。中国の伝説を劇にしながら、中国の文化を学び、又、楽しいボードゲームをしたり、工作で龍を作ったりしました。オリンピックも始まり、大きなポスターを作り、毎日更新されるメダルを種目別、国別でわかるようにしました。みんなのチームワークのおかげで立派なポスターになり、毎日更新するのが楽しかったみたいです。日本でも話題のバレンタインも大きなテーマの一つでした。一人一人メールボックスを作り、お友達に手紙を書きました。心のこもったメッセージをたくさん書いてくれました。バレンタイン当日はブラウニーを作りました。材料やレシピを勉強し、最後においしいブラウニーを食べました。バレンタインの由来、歴史も学びました。聖バレンタインの勇敢なお話にみんな感心していた様子でした。最後の週はプレジデントの日、アメリカの大統領を称える日として知られている伝統を学びました。最も有名なジョージワシントンとアブラハムリンカーンをもとに、アメリカの紙幣に顔を描いたり、冊子を作って発表したり、自分が大統領だったら何をしたいかを考えたりしました。今月はたくさん本を読み、ワークシートをこなしたり、みんなで楽しくできるボードゲームを作ったりしました。とても充実した一ヶ月の中で、さらに新しい伝統や文化にふれることができたと思います。
