Mad Hot Ballroom - Anyone can make it if they know how to shake it

On Monday night, February 27, some of the teachers from Global Kids Academy joined other educators in a nice evening at the movies by kind invitation from Toho Cinemas in Roppongi Hills. ‘Mad Hot Ballroom’ took us on a journey through part of the multicultural New York City school system.

In the documentary, fifth grade classes took ballroom dance lessons. They worked towards winning a competition at the end of a 10 week intense period of learning five dances. The kids became very dedicated and through the discipline of learning these dances, other aspects of their lives also began to move forward. Children with emotional and behaviour problems were able to find outlets for individual expression. Learning the dances provided focus for the kids. Throughout the movie, the children were interviewed and sometimes candidly filmed. Their dreams, viewpoints on life, and extremely intriguing and diverse personalities created an emotionally charged atmosphere that anyone who knows a child can very well understand. Overall, the film gave a feeling of endless possibilities for anyone from any background.
