This month was a great month for starting a new term. After a week of Spring break, the children came back to GKA for a fresh start. Because the cherry blossoms signify a new start in the Japanese culture, we started the month off with a Sakura theme.

We made a big tree with sakura flowers made by each of the children. They wrote words related to Spring and the cherry blossom. With all their effort, many of the children had been chosen for the Weekender Magazine writing contest. We also wrote about Children’s Day and made koinobori, to enter the next Weekender Magazine writing contest. In many parts of the world, Easter is celebrated in different ways. Some children read and presented what other countries do for Easter. Some children made Easter Eggs. They painted the eggs and made little baskets for them. At the end, they had to decode clues to find where little candies were hidden. April 22nd was Earth Day, and all the children discussed what we could do to help clean the earth. Many of the children distinguished the different kinds of waste belonging in the different trash bins. The older children studied about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. The next week, we focused on butterflies. We studied the life cycle of the butterfly, and made cute crafts. Lastly, we entered in the next Weekender Magazine writing contest because it was everyone’s favorite topic: “My Favorite Sport”. Many children wrote paragraphs about their favorite sport, sport teams, and athletes. We also played various games with sports flash cards. On the last Friday, Mika-sensei took the group to Roppongi Hills for a scavenger hunt. Along with the themes, and writing contest entries, we also focused on phonics and created mini-books and worksheets to make it fun. This month was filled with fresh and fun activities.
