Africa Remix at Mori Art Museum
Last week’s field trip took place at the Mori Art Museum. Students explored the Africa Remix exhibition, in order to learn more about Africa. Many of the students found that there is more to learn about a place than what is conveyed through textbooks and atlases. Here is what some of the students had to say about the trip.
Q: Why do they call it Africa Remix?
A: “They want to show a mix.” – Soichiro
“ They want to show everything.” – Joe
“My favorite was the dark room with crystal stones. It’s kind of interesting because the room is dark, but from the stones comes lots of light.” –Amy
“I liked the video showing the making of the bread. I didn’t know they put ice in the dough. Maybe it is to keep the dough cool, because Africa is hot.” – Meg
“My favorite was the room titled African Adventure. It had monkeys that looked like people. They were dressed in suits. They were all standing in the sand. There were dogs and bird shaped ones too. I think its about the people; the people in Africa.” – Soichiro
“I didn’t like the room with lots of mirrors and the television screens. It was scary. One man had a chain around his neck.” – Yuna
“The room with the CDs! I listened to two songs. They were interesting. I couldn’t understand what the songs were saying, but I liked the sound. I had never seen a jukebox before.” –Amy
“There was a room with many drums.” “I first thought they were mushrooms.” –Alisa and Emily
“Did you see the people with fire on their head?” – Joe
“There was a poem about scary things. I think it was about blood in the river.”-Joe
Q: “Why do you think artists sometimes made things that were scary?”
A: “They want to show about Africa, not just good things.” -Yuna
“So they can spread their story of Africa around the world.” –Soichiro
“They want to show everything. Some things are scary.” –Kent
Stay tuned for this week's field trip summary. Our theme this week is Hawaii!
