Art of Disney Museum

"Sleeping Beauty
There was a forest and castle background. Water color paint was used. My favorite Disney character is Chip and Dale. I learned how to draw Mickey Mouse. Next time I go, I want to take my friends."

The Tokyo Cosmopolitan Museum’s exhibition on the Art of Disney was the perfect destination for this week’s field trip. The trip gave some of the older kids at GKA a chance to look at original storyboards, sketches, and paintings from Disney classics dating all the way back to the birth of Disney and Mickey Mouse in 1928. The trip to the museum was a long one, but the exhibition proved to be well worth everyone’s journey. As we entered the museum, exhaustion was left at the door, and inside oohs and aahs were heard from everyone as they looked for their favorite characters. The children as well as the teachers were surprised at how much effort went into making each Disney film. Sleeping Beauty in particular was the product of thousands of inspiration sketches and detailed scenery paintings, many of which we got to see. Besides looking at the paintings and sketches, the kids enjoyed watching Disney’s first short film, “Steam Boat Willie.” They also got a chance to learn simple tricks, which made them expert Mickey Mouse drawers. The visit ended with a crafts project, which consisted of making Mickey Mouse hats and princess crowns. When everyone was finished the kids were photographed modeling their hats and crowns at a photo booth.

While the older kids were touring the Disney Gallery today, the younger children took a trip to the Prince Hotel where an interactive Winnie the Pooh exhibition was taking place.
