GKA Children Study Global Warming
“The polar bears will drown if we don’t do something about this!” This was the reaction of one 6-year old while discussing endangered species and global warming.
Throughout the summer, curiosity took the students from one question to the next. One week, we focused on animal extinction and learned about dinosaurs, the woolly mammoth and dodo birds. Another week, the children explored the topic of endangered species and watched the documentary film White Planet. A circle time discussion yielded many questions and comments. The children noted that in the final scene, the polar bear could not find solid ice to stand on. Is it because of global warming? Using information from the recently released book and documentary An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, the older children explained to the younger children how the effects of global warming are felt most dramatically in the Arctic. Children from all age groups made a poster of Arctic wildlife to remind us of the animals immediately at risk. Finally, a five-year old added carrots to make sure the white hare do not go hungry.
